Hispanic Medical Clinic

The High Point Community Foundation partnered with the Cornerstone Physicians of High Point to conduct a free medical clinic for school age children. This event was setup in response to an unmet need that was presenting itself in the community. The local schools were being overwhelmed by a large contingent of Hispanic children, who were coming to their schools without the proper shots and school physicals. Over 200 children were treated this day and over 50 adults received shots.

This Hispanic community is a very vibrant and positive force in our High Point community and this event was a wonderful way to show them that they are appreciated and welcomed in High Point.

The Equipment Passback Program

This program was a partnership with the Eddie Pope Urban Soccer League and Eurosport Catalogue. The goal was to provide underprivileged children with soccer balls and cleats so that they could participate in their league with proper equipment.

The Eddie Pope Urban Soccer League is underwritten by Eddie Pope, a local soccer player, who has gone on to become a professional soccer star in the MLS and who has also played a key role in our National Team's recent World Cup Campaign. This program not only promotes soccer, it also teaches and reinforces good study habits and positive life skills. The Community Foundation is proud to work with Eddie and Eurosport to positively impact our local youth.

Traci Hamiel

Traci Hamiel is a young woman who was born with a myriad of very serious physical problems that have dramatically impacted her life. Dr. Otis Tillman, her Doctor and a Community Foundation Board Member, discovered that Traci's Mother had a desperate need for a car to transport Traci.

Over the years as Traci has grown it had become more and more difficult for Gloria to get her in and out of the compact car they owned. Gloria had suffered a series of back injuries and the future looked grim. Dr. Tillman felt the Community Foundation might be able to help her and through the Foundation's relationships with our Donors and area businesses, Traci received a new van especially equipped for her special needs. It was a wonderful example of how needs can be met by a community who truly cares.

Phillips Fields

The PSA (Piedmont Soccer Alliance) is a young and growing High Point soccer club that serves 900 children in both recreational and competitive soccer. Up to now they had always played on city fields and there were never enough to go around.

Phil and Sallie Phillips, who have a Donor Advised Fund at the High Point Community Foundation, wanted to help the Club establish a permanent home and with a $400,000.00 gift they purchased the land and Phillips Fields became a reality. Both of the Phillips children, Jordan and Courtney, played in the Club and their parents dedicated the complex in their honor. In the fall of 2002 the first games were played on the fields and thanks to one family's vision the club now has a bright future and some beautiful soccer pitches.
