Herman Walter Bernard
Whereas, Herman Walter Bernard was born March 12, 1917, in High Point, North Carolina; and
Whereas, he graduated from High Point High School in 1933 and attended High Point College; and
Whereas, he was founder and President of Casard Furniture Manufacturing Corp. and founder and President of Bernards, Inc.; and
Whereas, he served in the U. S. Army, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, was promoted to First Lieutenant and continued to serve as a reserve officer until his honorable discharge on April 1, 1953; his decorations included five battles of the European Theater of Operations and the World War II Victory Medal; and
Whereas, he was Chairman and a Director of Tom Haggai Associates and Chairman of the High Point Redevelopment Commission; and
Whereas, he served on the Board of Directors of the Southern Furniture Exposition Building; and
Whereas, he was Chairman of the High Point Regional Health System Board of Trustees from 1981 to 1983 when the new facility was built and served on the Leadership Committee for the $54 million Building Fund Campaign and on the High Point Regional Hospital Endowment Board; and
Whereas, he was Past President of the Co-Founders Club, School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina, and on the Board of Directors of the Medical Foundation of North Carolina, Inc.; and
Whereas, he served as President of B'nai Israel Synagogue in High Point, was Past President of the North Carolina Association of Jewish Men, a former member of the Board of Directors of the Blumenthal Jewish Home, Past President of the Triad Jewish Federation, served 40 years on the High Point Chevra Kadisha, served 20 years as Chairman of the Cemetary Committee, and served twice as Chairman of the Building Committee of B'nai Israel Synagogue; and
Whereas, he served on the Board of Trustees at High Point University; and
Whereas, his awards and milestones included the UJA Prime Minister's Mission to Israel in 1973, the Greensboro Jewish Federation Mission to Israel in 1974, Leadership Member of the Boy Scouts of America in 1980, Friend of the Adams Memorial YWCA in 1989, Human Services Award, honored by the NCAJM and the State of North Carolina by Gov. Jim Hunt, donated a pool to the YMCA Camp Cheerio in memory of his beloved brother, Gilbert Bernard, High Point Citizen of the Year in 1982, State of Israel Bonds Honoree, North Carolina Triad Israel Bonds Campaign in 1974, Distinguished Service Award from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1990, endowed the Herman W. Bernard Trinity Scholarship at Duke University, donated the Bechtler Gold to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Wilson Library, Greensboro Jewish Federation Special Recognition Award for lifelong involvement in Tikkun Olam, Hadassah Founder and Hadassah Golden Wreath Society of Major Donors; and
Whereas, he was an outstanding member of the Board of Trustees of the High Point Community Foundation.
